an extra sentence or two in the beginning of the introduction defining/describing exactly what an SSD is would be beneficial

  • RESOLUTION

Replaced as suggested with highlighted text.

The species sensitivity distribution (SSD) is a statistical device that is used to estimate either the concentration of a chemical (the HCx) that is hazardous to no more than x% of all species, or the fraction (x%) of species that would be harmed by a given concentration.

  • Really? If the reader doesn’t know what an SSD is then the rest of the paper will not make sense! Anyway, rather than antagonize, I suggest the Intro starts with:
The species sensitivity distribution (SSD) is a statistical device that is used to estimate either the concentration of a chemical (the HCx) that is harmful to no more than x% of all species, or the fraction (x%) of species that would be harmed by a given concentration.

    • If you include this then my comment under 2 can be ignored. But given that the H is hazardous not harmed, better to stick to the words in the definition: ”’ that is hazardous to no more than x% of all species, or the fraction (x%) of species that would be harmed by a given concentration
