The novel sections are the advocacy of model averaging and mixture models. The model averaging section should be expanded to include some noted cautions (discussed below) and more details on how the two highlighted software packages implement this. At least one good example with data would enhance this section greatly.

    No change. Will respond by noting: (i) additional text included already in model averaging (reference to Schwarz and Tillmanns document); (ii) software section and Table completely rewritten which should address some or all of the concerns; and (iii) no room for further examples – we’ve noted that this is a paper in prep.

  • I have posted some potentially useful suggestions for potential examples at #18. I’ve explored a range of option from Graeme and Rick as well…. Which to use may depend on how we handle some of the other comments.

  • We already discuss some of the limitations:

    Page 12; line 11: it has been suggested that model averaging is only likely to be useful when (a) … and (b) …;

    Page 12; line 21: Another potentially problematic issue with model averaging is …

    Will look into working up an example as suggested.
